When discussing monkey bread one could be talking of 2 distinct things:

Monkey bread can be a sweet yeast bread formed with lumps of butter dipped dough. The dough is arranged into 3 or 4 layers inside a pan. Once baked, the clumps cling together to form a solid loaf.

It can also mean a gourd-like fruit of the baobab, a thick-trunked tree native to Africa. The extremely high-starch fruit is generally eaten only by monkeys (hence the name).

The fruit can be eaten as is by humans or used to make a drink. Its flesh is dried and ground into flour, and the leaves are dried and crushed for flavoring. Even the pulp of the tree is sometimes eaten.

How do I make monkey bread?

Easy Method

Stir sugar and cinnamon together. Cut biscuits into fourths. Roll each in mixture. Grease bundt pan and sprinkle bottom with nuts. Alternate biscuits and nuts. Top with monkey bread topping.

TOPPING:

Melt butter, cinnamon and brown sugar. Pour over biscuits. Use fork method to check. Bake at 350 degrees for 25 to 30 minutes. Cool 10 minutes in pan. Turn upside down onto plate. Pull off chunks to eat.

Not a big wussy method

Peel and cube 1 potato and cook until very soft in 1 1/4 cups water. Mash potato in water. Heat milk, oil and sugar; cook to lukewarm. Dissolve yeast in water. Combine milk and yeast mixtures. Add eggs, salt and potato water. Add flour and mix well. Turn into greased bowl and grease top. Cover with tea towel and let rise in warm place. To make into monkey bread loaf, punch dough down, roll in flour, pinch off pieces and roll into 1 1/2" oblong shapes. Dip each into melted butter. Lay in greased and floured ring mold or bundt pan as you would stack bricks. Let rise and bake at 350 degrees for 30 to 45 minutes or until brown.
